Foundations of Grace
Saved By Grace
Before your design becomes something you understand, apply, or live out, it must first be received through grace.
Section One
Saved By Grace
God’s grace is most often defined as unmerited favor. It is His free gift that allows us to embrace salvation through Jesus. He literally has grace for us.
Grace can also be defined as holy enablement. It acts in our lives by giving us the power and strength we need. His grace gives us the ability to do what we are called to do but could never do on our own.
Paul explained grace as power for living. Grace does not simply forgive us; it empowers us, strengthens us, and sustains us as we walk with God.
“And God is able to make all grace overflow to you, so that, always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.”
2 Corinthians 9:8
“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9
Section Two
Grace and Design
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:8–10
Saved by Grace
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Designed on Purpose
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus.”
With Good Works to Do
“To do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
You have designed purpose. You were designed with intention to do good works prepared in advance. God prepares the good work, then equips the person.
Good works are intended to be purposeful, not passive; devoted, not driven.
“This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.”
Titus 3:8
Section Three
God’s Grace
We all know that grace is unmerited favor, but it is also holy enablement. His grace gives us the ability to do what we are called to do but could never do on our own.
Abounds
God is able to bless you abundantly so that you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8
Proceeds
God prepared good works in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
Invites
Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him and receive rest. Matthew 11:28
Activates
God works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose. Philippians 2:13
Sustains
His grace is sufficient, and His power is made perfect in weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9
Restores
God works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28
Section Four
What Grace Means for DesignID
-
Grace is the energy of God moving through your design.
-
Grace is the force that activates, empowers, and sustains you.
-
Grace is the movement of God within the Architect, Artisan, Shepherd, and Steward reflections.
-
Grace explains why some things bring life and others drain life.
-
Grace reveals where God invites you to rest, grow, and partner with others.
-
Grace ensures your design is not self-powered but Spirit-powered.
Section Five
Whose You Are Trumps Who You Are
Grace gives life and helps your design become not just who you are, but how God works through you. Saved people are re-created people. The Bible speaks of the newness that comes from belonging to Christ.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17
Who You Are
Personality, experiences, talents, story, and how others might describe you.
Whose You Are
A child of God, fully known, fully loved, and secure in Christ.
Who you are explains your uniqueness. Whose you are anchors your worth and purpose.
Practice
Receive Grace Before You Apply Design
Take a moment to slow down and remember that your design is not something you have to prove. It is something God invites you to steward by grace.
Reflect
Where do you most need to remember that grace is a gift, not something you earn?
Notice
Where has God’s grace already empowered you to do something you could not do on your own?
Respond
What would change if you lived this week from whose you are instead of trying to prove who you are?

Next Lesson: On Purpose – For Purpose
Now that we have remembered that design begins with grace, the next lesson explores what it means to live on purpose and for purpose.
